April's apartment of the month was in Charlestown. Before we move to the next apartment of the month, we wanted you to know what's so great about this neighborhood.
Walk up and down the gas lit streets of Charlestown and you’ll instantly feel the history, culture and diversity that make up this one square mile community.
The Charlestown Preservation Society focuses on maintaining the architectural heritage and quality of life for its 15,000 residents. With the warm weather coming soon, some great outdoor space to check out is the Navy Yard along the Harbor, City Square Park and Harvard Mall.
The Training Field where the militia trained during the American Revolution is also a picturesque park where people sit outside, enjoy the weather and relax on the weekends.
Charlestown residents also enjoy communal sports and recreational activities including the neighborhood pool and Charlestown tennis club. The Boys and Girls Club is also a large part of the community and most families find a way to participate. On the waterfront you’ll find many residents enjoying the marina and taking sailing lessons offered to both adults and kids.
Main Street and Bunker Hill Street are Charlestown’s main commercial areas and offer charming and inviting restaurants, coffee shops, Johnny’s Foodmaster grocery store and more.
Charlestown is a great neighborhood to try a new restaurant and there are many options. For fine dining, Tod English’s Olives is located in City Square, and for a taste of Moroccan cuisine, try Tangerino’s on Main Street. For a more casual environment, Tavern on the Water on 8th Street and Warren Taven, the oldest tavern in Massachusetts, are wonderful options as well.
Newcomers to Charlestown often inquire about the accessibility to Boston by public transportation. Simply walk over the Charlestown Bridge from City Square and you’re in the North End. MGH is about a mile and a half from Charlestown and a great walk when the New England weather turns up.
Commuting to and from Charlestown using the MBTA is easy as well. The Orange Line has two stops in Charlestown; Community College and Sullivan Square Station. It also offers easy access to and from Boston with the 92 bus on Main Street and the 93 bus which can be picked up on Bunker Hill Street. Another mode of transportation especially enjoyable in the nicer weather is the water shuttle. Departing at the Charlestown Navy Yard, this is just a 10 minute ride into Long Wharf.
Charlestown is included in a significant part of American history. The Battle of Bunker Hill fought during the American Revolution is memorialized today by the famous Bunker Hill Monument. In 1800, the US Navy designed a boatyard known today as the Boston National Historical Park. Charlestown’s Navy Yard, where the USS Constitution resides today, is open to residents and visitors 365 days a year.
