Start Organized, Be Successful

Yesterday I helped my sister Erica move into her dorm. She was returning to UMass Amherst as a sophomore and off to a great start. The move-in was organized, easy and as a result, stress-free and quick. It got me thinking about a majority of our clients, typically those who are graduating from college or have been out of school for a few years.
Organization can make all the difference in the world when mapping out a plan for a move to a dorm, a new city or even planning a new (or first) career. I'm not necessarily talking about organization in the physical sense of the word, but more in the sense of being mentally organized. When my sister prepared for her first day of college she thought first about the school year and planned out what she'd be doing and packed everything that would help her accomplish that. She made a list and gave herself time to gather all of those things in anticipation of the move-in date so everything was all ready to go.
She also did a little bit of research before her move-in day. She found out if she could move in a little earlier to avoid the huge crowds, long wait at the elevators and traffic jam in the parking lot.
To connect this example to organizing for a job, the same principles apply. Research the market. Find out more about the types of companies or organizations you are applying for before you jump right in. Learn what they are looking for in new employees and make sure it's something you can provide and are interested in as well. Learn about the people who work for these companies. What are their backgrounds? How do your credentials match in comparison?
Organize your job search. Make a list of what you want and then write down the steps you are going to take to get there. Who do you know that you can speak to? What will you need to provide them with? Break it down into small steps at first and work your way towards your goal. Organization is something that gets better with practice and is a beneficial skill to have in any career or phase of your life.
