Searching for a job can be a lengthy and frustrating process. Sometimes you end up sending out multiple resumes and apply for countless jobs online without even getting a response.

Networking is one of the most effective ways to find a job. Here are a few tips to help you make big leaps forward in networking:

• Be concise- Before you get out there and start talking to people about what kind of job you’re looking for, make sure YOU know what kind of job you’re looking for. Start by writing down what you want and how your networks can help you.

• Practice- Don’t be caught off guard when someone asks you how they can help you. Practice your elevator speech. Being prepared will help you feel confident and that will come through to whoever you’re talking to.

• Spread the word- Once you have that elevator speech down pat, it’s no good to you unless you use it. There are multiple resources available to you through your own networks, other people’s connections, and many solid networking groups in Boston. This takes time and doesn’t evolve over night, but the seeds you plant by spreading the word will come back to you with great results.

• Link In- You most likely have a facebook account and maybe twitter as well. What about Linked In? It’s an excellent way to put your resume online and communicate with your networks. It’s worth spending some time on this account to make sure you’re getting the most out of your networking possibilities.

• Follow-up- To effectively network, you must consistently do it. Reaching out to your networks to thank them for the time they took speaking with you or connecting you with a potential employer is an absolute must. If you don’t show your appreciation, you won’t be thought of again. The same goes for following up with contacts who you are trying to connect with. Be persistent without being a pest. Find an appropriate time span to send emails or give a phone call to let your contacts know what you’ve been up to or remind them that you’re still looking for a job.
