Everything is Noticed in the Work Place

This week I'm preparing for a seminar on Corporate Etiquette. It made me think about all of the small yet important behaviors that we take for granted in the work place. It's easy to get into a comfort zone and forget that your actions are being noticed and judged constantly.

Walking in the door a few minutes late may not seem like a problem when you see your fellow co-workers doing the same, and especially when you stayed later than your boss the night before. But don’t forget that your boss doesn’t necessarily know that you stayed late and regardless, he or she still expects you to be on time when you come to work.

Another area where people sometimes slip is in how they dress. They watch the way their co-workers dress, or feel like people don't really notice. Don’t misunderstand silence for approval. You should be dressing for the job you want, not the job you have.

Another topic to be mindful of is your internet use. So many people think that no one can see their gmail chat box or facebook page open, especially when they are so quick at minimizing the screens. It’s obvious! Keep yourself in check with how often you’re going on the internet for personal use. Even if your not aware of it, your boss most likely is, and it could negatively affect your image in the work place.

Just remember that your potential to excel is in YOUR hands. What you put into your job is what you'll get out of it.
